And while NASCAR has taken over Indianapolis Motor Speedway, with testing Tuesday and Wednesday, the Brickyard will soon begin preparations for another edition of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”
In Indianapolis 500 history, only three drivers have won the event four times: A.J. Foyt, Al Unser and Rick Mears. Foyt set the mark in 1977; Unser joined him in ’87. Mears’ fourth win came in 1991. Helio Castroneves put himself at the cusp of four with his third in 2009. This will be his fourth try to tie the icons of the sport. But Castroneves now is in a race to get there before Dario Franchitti, who won last year’s race and has won three of the past six. Castroneves and Franchitti drive for two of the best teams — Team Penske and Chip Ganassi Racing, respectively — so each has an excellent chance to make history.

A.J. Allmendinger won five races in his Champ Car World Series days (2004-06), but he never competed in the 500 before moving to NASCAR in the late summer of 2006. This is his chance, and it will be a good one. Allmendinger will join Castroneves and Will Power on Roger Penske’s powerful team. Allmendinger replaces Ryan Briscoe, who won the pole for last year’s race and will drive for Ganassi this year after signing a one-race deal.
Connor Daly also is in this rookie class. He’s the son of former Formula One and CART driver Derek Daly, whose best 500 finish in six tries was 12th in 1985. Connor is a 21-year-old Indianapolis native, who will drive the No. 41 Honda for A.J. Foyt Racing.
The rookie class also includes Carlos Munoz of Andretti Auto sport and Indy Car regular Tristan Gautier of Schmidt Peterson Motorsports.

The prospects for an American winner this year are the best they’ve been since Cornish started on the pole and beat Marco Andretti to the checkered flag in the final 200 yards. (Michael Andretti was third that year.) For Sunday’s 97th running, five Americans will start in the top 10 positions, including Ed Carpenter on the pole with Marco Andretti on the outside of the front row. NASCAR’s Allmendinger, and will start fifth. In the third row, inside, is Ryan Hunter-Ready, last year’s IZOD Indy Car Series champion, the first American to win the Indy Car series title since Hornish in 2006 and the first in a unified series since Al Unser Jr. in 1994. JR Hildebrand starts on the inside of the fourth row
